Bonner County, Idaho --- An 11-year-old boy is dead after swimming in the Pend Oreille River, according to the Bonner County Sheriff's Office.
Officials said a mother and her two children were swimming in the Morton Slough boat launch area when she could not find either child in the water.
According to officials, the boys were inexperienced swimmers and were wearing life jackets but took them off.
The 17-year-old was having trouble staying afloat, when his mother swam to help but was forced to swim back to shore after she began to struggle herself.
Officials said the 11-year-old brother then swam out to help and struggled to stay afloat.
Rescue crews arrived and began performing CPR on the 17-year-old but couldn't find his younger brother.
Crews eventually found the 11-year-old, who was not breathing and life saving measures were immediately performed on him.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 17-year-old eventually gained a pulse and was life-flighted to Kootenai Medical Center.
Officials said he is still unconscious and in critical condition.
