Writer Steve Winston said "it was hard to pick the Top 10" towns where people are friendly, the atmosphere is authentic “country”, and outdoor recreational opportunities are limitless.
Winston said Coeur d’Alene was his number one pick for its cobbled sidewalks, gas-lit streetlamps, green awnings and red-brick storefronts. Coeur d’Alene is known for its clear blue lake surrounded by 7,000-foot mountains covered in green forest. Winston acknowledged the stunning views from every angle of Tubbs Hill, the city’s rocky and forested peninsula.

Sandpoint, was voted on by USA Today readers in 2012 as the most beautiful small town in America. Winston called Sandpoint a “classic old Northwestern town”, recognizing the ample opportunities for fishing, kayaking and boating with bald eagles circling above. He also said the sunsets will mesmerize visitors.
