NEAR OAKESDALE, Wa--Work is underway in Whitman County to transform an empty field into a new wind farm.
The farm sits off Baird Road between Oakesdale and Rosalia. It’s all part of a new clean energy project.
Avista wants to harvest clean energy and First Wind will enable that.
The independent energy company will raise 58 wind turbines on these farm hills near the town of Oakesdale. Collectively they will produce enough electricity for roughly 30,000 Avista customers.
While generating power, Oakesdale Mayor Dennis Palmer says they will also generate revenue for his small Whitman County town.
Farmers will continue to farm around the turbines.
Hollis Jamison manages 2000 acres of farmland in the area. He says while some people have protested windmill project, he and other landowners he knows welcome it.
First Wind expects all of the windmills to be up and running by the end of the year.
