SPOKANE -- Spokane Police have extra patrols in Riverfront Park Tuesday morning, as they continue their search for the man who attacked a high school teenage girl who was jogging Monday morning.

Spokane Police say the high school freshman was attacked as she ran through the Park at about 7:15 Monday morning. It happened near the Clock Tower, where the girl said an unknown man grabbed her as she stopped to adjust some equipment.

Spokane Police Officer Tim Moses tells KREM.com "she fought him off pretty fiercely." A witness nearby saw the attack, approached, and the attacker ran Northbound through the park. Officer Moses says the girl usually jogs with a group, but happened to be by herself Monday morning.

The man is described as white, between 25 to 35 years of age, about 5'8" tall, 170 pounds with blondish colored hair and a goatee. He was wearing a blue or purple hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233 or just call 911.

The Arizona Solution, Support your PD and Court(s) funding in all ways possible, yet demand they build a new Jail for minimal rights care, make it as close to inhumane as possible, minimal and staple food only, minimal rights period, load it with gaurds and open an expressway to our court(s) system, speedy trials, immediate service of sentence, no if's and or but's, stop the delays, stop the excuses, focus on the task at hand and allocate the resources that support upholding the laws, until then our system will continue to be weighed down with repeat offenders and continue to kick out people that belong behind bars, and the criminals will have no reason to stop. Look at the local most wanted ads, " this 26 yr old male has a 14 yr local criminal history " Really !! Since age 12 ! ? Laughable and NOT #1 just remember EDDIE RAY HALL ! Nuff Said !! Support your Local law enforcement and support your court system, give them the resources, then demand results, or their jobs.

tobyjones...pepper spray is not defined in the RCW as a "dangerous weapon." It is perfectly legal for anyone to carry it for protection. Do you really think the police would give her a hard time for "carrying mace in the park," when she just used it on some scum to save her life? side note: ladies, aim the spray for the "T-Zone"...which is the nose and eyes. Spray, move, repeat if necessary. That's all the training needed. Peace.

daylight rape is not that uncommon here in Spokane - we had someone doing it a cpl years ago Downtown/Brownes/Pleasant section. Now this guy. And dont blame Riverfront like its a ghetto cause Franklin Park aint nowhere near there and it happend there last month....

This girl is awesome, I bet that creep thought he had an easy target but she ended fighting him back GOOD FOR HER! and good for the person who didn't look the other way. I recently read an article about a woman who was raped in broad daylight on the sidewalk, about 6 or 7 cars passed by but none stopped. Only one of the drivers called 911.

Get a gun! Pepper spray this jerk and he runs off and does it again and again. Shoot him in the leg and he's going to need to wait for SPD to come and save him. Ladies, go get guns and take some gun safty self-defense courses! Pepper spray is for victems.

Running by yourself is always a bad idea for anyone , male or female. If you feel the need carry some pepper spray in your hand, works even on dogs.

Well just another case of a scum bag. Use whatever force nessesary to protect yourself. SPD can not be everywhere all the time. Its not going to be easy but our city cannot be overrun with thugs and scum bags. Fight back.

We either need enough police to watch over everything constantly or we need to be allowed to protect ourselves. (or just be ok with constantly being robbed or assulted)

I am sure if she was running prior to school she would also not be allowed to have anything dangerous (pepper spray, batton, knife, gun) would not be allowed at school.

Even if she could legally poses it in the park Spokane municiple code does not allow "dangerous weapons" (in violation of state law btw) in parks http://www.spokanecity.org/services/documents/smc/?Section=10.10.040 it is something like a $500 dollar ticket.

A high school freshman may or may not be legally allowed to posess pepper spray in WA State: Section 9.91.160 explicitly authorizes the sale and use of "personal protection spray devices" such as "mace, pepper mace, or pepper gas". There is an age restriction to persons age 18 and older, or 14 with a parent or guardian's permission.

I am a native of Spokane and Riverfront is a great place to walk. Sadly, as Spokane's population grows, so does the crime. My advice is get a German Shepherd. I have three and I take turns walking them. The nice thing is there my "element of surprise". One simple command can turn into a nightmare for any attacker. I would go to your local Humane Society and adopt one because they are loyal, and strong and have no problems protecting those they love. Add a self defense class and you will be very confident and ready!

if you carry pepper spray, or ANY type of weapon, train in the use of it. And making tracks is SOOOO right - pepper dont matter worth sheet if it's in yr purse and you cant get it out - so be prepared, and dont think you look silly jogging with a thing of pepper spray cause you dont, you look SMART. Also, it'll help you if an un-human animal, such as a dog, suddenly attacks as well. But yyeah, you wanna train and you wanna have it on you cause the attacker could use it on YOU if you dont know what you are doing....

My first thought on the pepper spray was how few people would be able to get it out in time to make it effective. More likely than not someone would be reaching for it and pull it out just in time for the attacker to take it from her and spray it in her face. The suggestion about running with it in your hand is a good one. Then someone suggests guns--exactly the same problem. Unless you are well trained and running with it in your hand, just forget it and fight and scream like this lady did--I hope nobody just takes that advice.

Wow! Please, Spokane is really not that bad compared to a big city like Seattle or Portland! I do agree that some one out by themselves should carry pepper spray though for the just in case!

Ladies, if you are going to carry pepper spray, good on ya. However, it is totally USELESS unless you carry it properly. If you are walking or running alone (or even with a friend), that canister needs to be in your strong hand with the nozzle properyl oreinted. When the hand is brought up, the nozzle should be facing the attacker. Trust me when I say that there will be no time to unclip a canister, get it out of a fanny pack, etc., at the moment of truth. Attackers do not give 3-5 seconds warning before they are on you. CARRY IT RIGHT!! And stay safe.

Instead of pepper spray invest in a gun. They work better.

Pepper spray is a great idea. When I lived in Seattle I often walked with my keys poking through my fingers. If someone grabbed me I was prepared to go for the eyes.

Glad to hear she was able to fight him off. A real piece of S____. I purchased pepper spray at general store for my gals to carry. They had a large selection in December and not expensive.

This is why I invested in pepper spray. There are so many crazy people out there, poor girl. You can buy some for 7 bucks, I think every girl should carry some.
