SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. - Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 19 year old driver after they say his truck hit a pedestrian walking along Hoerner Avenue and North Atlantic Wednesday night. Investigators say the driver, Kelly Walsh, took off after the collision.
The accident was reported just before midnight. A witness told investigators he saw Walsh driving his truck close to the curb and the vehicle struck a woman from behind. The witness said Walsh got out of his truck, ran over to the victim, hugged her, and then drove away.
"When he hit me, I was just . . . dazed," said Karen Unruh, the victim. "I feel sore and I'm getting around by using my neighbors crutches."
Unruh said she got off the bus in North Spokane late Wednesday and began walking home.
"I guess he was coming off Division apparently and didn't have his lights on and I was way over off to the side," Unruh added.
She said the pickup truck hit her from behind.
"I kind of just rolled," she said.
A witness reported that Walsh exited the truck and run to Unruh.
"He then came over and said, 'Oh, are you alright?' and tried to help," Unruh continued. "When I got up, he then hugged me and said, 'Oh, my mom's a nurse. I'll go get her,' and then he left after that. He didn't stick around."
Unruh said he never returned.
"I'm a little bit angry with him," she said. "Thank goodness I didn't break a bone at all."
Neighbors helped her to the curb and called 911. Authorities said they found Walsh at his home and saw fresh rub marks on the passenger side corner and hood of his truck.Officials said Walsh and his mother initially denied the teen hit anybody. But Walsh's mother eventually said he did hit Unruh and they planned to call their attorney in the morning according to authorities.
Officials said Unruh was uncooperative when they tried to arrest him.
Unruh was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators said they obtained a description of Walsh’s license plate number from the witness.
He was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the felony charge of Hit and Run with injury and the misdemeanor charge of Resisting Arrest.
