OMAK, Wash. (AP) -- Light winds and overnight efforts by firefighters held a wildfire burning on the Colville Indian Reservation to about 5,000 acres, or nearly 8 square miles.
Fire spokesman Mark Grassel says that several hundred additional firefighters are expected to arrive Thursday. He says the fire is currently at zero containment.
The fire previously burned two homes and has led to the closure for the week of the historic St. Mary's Mission and the Paschal Sherman Indian School. The Wenatchee World reports that about 50 boarding students were evacuated Tuesday night, returned briefly to get some belongings and then were taken home Wednesday.
Grassel says there is no rain in the forecast so the fire, which is burning mostly in grass and sagebrush, could burn for some time.
