SPOKANE-- With Mayor Verner losing re-election we wanted to know why you thought she lost.

KREM 2's Katie Utehs looked into Verner's term and some of the key tipping points for Spokane voters.

You know the phrase timing is everything.
The Otto Zehm incident didn't happen during Verner's term, but Karl Thompson's criminal trial couldn't have come at a worse time for the mayor.
Some say her handling of the case lost her votes.

Mayoral candidate David Condon used the Otto Zehm case in political ads.

Mayor Mary Verner gave him the opening by holding this press conference and passing out a frequently asked questions sheet. She refused to answer media questions.

We later learned there was a factual error on the sheet. Federal prosecutors called Verner out on the timeline error.
She later corrected the issue, but the damage may have already been done.
Condon also capitalized on water rates. Verner countered saying city council implemented the rate hike and she fought it.
David Condon has vowed to run a transparent government.
If he does in fact take office in January we'll see if he sticks to campaign ad promises.
