SPOKANE, Wash. -- Members of the Westboro Baptist Church planned to protest the memorial of former Speaker of the House Tom Foley.
Foley, a native of Spokane, died October 18 at age 84. St. Aloysius Church and Gonzaga University invited the public to the service on Friday.
Westboro members said they organized the demonstration to protest Foley’s Catholic faith as well as his pro-choice policies. They posted the information on their website.
The Westboro Baptist Church has threatened to protest multiple events around the nation, including in Spokane. The church also has a history of not showing up after making such threats, however.
On Tuesday, President Barack Obama ordered flags be flown at half staff in honor of Foley. The former Speaker of the House and former ambassador to Japan was remembered the same day in a memorial service at the U.S. Capitol.
