SPOKANE, Wash. -- Crews responded to a water main break at the intersection of Helena St. and Riverside Ave. Friday morning.

The break happened in a 6-inch cast iron main under the street surface, crews said.  Several blocks in the area were shut down because of water pouring out onto the road.  Water was pooling up on Madelia Street as well, so City street department staff shut down Madelia from Front to Riverside.   Riverside was closed from Helena to Madelia.

Sewer department crews had to remove water from Madelia before that street could be reopened.

City crews quickly turned off the valves leading to the water main at Helena and Riverside but workers were not able to fix the broken main until later in the morning.

The road closures were expected to be lifted around noon.
