NEAR LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. -- A stretch of cable barriers along Interstate 90 near Liberty Lake is still intact despite a high speed wreck Monday night.  The Washington State Patrol says a driver was going upwards of 100 m.p.h. when she lost control, rolled her car, and plowed into the cable barrier.  Police say the barrier probably saved lives.

It has been in place for about ten years.  They were controversial at first, especially on the west side of the state where they didn't always stop cars from crossing the median.  But in the case of Monday night's wreck, police say the barrier worked just as it should.

Poles and concrete are scattered in the median on I-90 where Jessica Derosie, 20, wrecked her car.  But the cables are still in place.  In all, about 18 posts were hit.  12 came off the cables along with the concrete base.

"The little poles and some of the concrete bases came out.  That's ok, that's how it's supposed to work," said Washington State Department of Transportation official Al Gilson.

Crews were out Tuesday starting to fix the barrier.  Department of Transportation crews should have it fixed sometime this week.

I, too, don't expect that my family would be this irresponsible behind the wheel. scoobydoo10 and lovemylittleman, it's courteous of you both to be so generous towards this girl -- but let's turn it around: short of a legitimate medical emergency beyond her control, if someone YOU loved was killed by this imbecile, would you be so benign in your judgment THEN? Part of society's problem is that no one is expected to pass judgment on this kind of ignorance, and kids grow up expecting no criticism or consequences to anything they do. Sorry, but I'm with the rest of the intolerant, judgmental crowd: she could have easily killed someone who WAS driving responsibly, and that someone could have been someone I love.

Please, have some decency for the friends and family of this young lady. She is a sweet girl. Very caring heart and always a smile for everyone. The facts of the accident have not been determined (like - was she having a seizure when she wrecked...). Please, if you are a believer and follower of Jesus - please pray for her and her family. Godspeed Jessica.

What do you bet that she doesn't have medical insurance? I hope she survives with a functioning brain and body or the taxpayers will be paying for her care for the rest of her life...and probably ours.

to Graham: The fact that you're saying she should have died is cold hearted and VERY rude. yes it was a dumb decision BUT she's a human being and i'm sure if it were one of YOUR family members i can gaurantee you would not be saying the same things. please if you having nothing nice to say, keep it to yourself.

While i'm sure they do work some of the time, maybe even the majority of the time. You do NOT want to bear witness to the aftermath of a motorycyclist hitting one, all it takes is someone changing lanes into a bike, they then go off the road and into one. They WILL litterally pull a body apart. I still can't believe they're allowed. Removable concrete barriers would be safer for EVERYONE, and last longer with less maintenence.
