SANDPOINT -- The Sandpoint City Council has voted to quit adding fluoride to the municipal water system that also serves communities from Kootenai to Dover.

The 4-2 vote last week followed comments by more than a dozen people arguing against fluoridation at the meeting.

Some who spoke out against fluoridation said they were being medicated against their will.

Fluoride is added to drinking water to help reduce tooth decay.

It comes down to personal choice and life still. We don’t outlaw Tobacco, alcohol, or like California try to outlaw saturated fat, even though they have few if any redeeming qualities. Fluoride has its good points but it causes problems for some, and there are other options to increase your fluoride and dental hygiene. Fluoride in my grandma’s water could kill her, as a cancer survivors, the radiation they use to treat the cancer had damaged her digestive system severely one of the side effects is she has to get non fluoride toothpaste. And that is not the only story out there of someone being intolerant to fluoride. Making the water undrinkable to the few that have problems is Still not worth helping the lazy and poor with an easy fix to get better dental hygiene even the poor can usually afford toothpaste.

Any references more recent than 17 years ago Carter? I thought we fluoridated the water to prevent tooth decay in our children... and children in poverty especially. Would you also suggest that the elderly should refrain from brushing their teeth with fluoride to avoid hip fractures and cancer as well?

The devastating, toxic effects of fluoride are well documented by mainstream organizations. The Journal of the American Medical Association 1990-1992 has reported a greater incidence of hip fractures in fluoridated areas in the U.S. and Britain. TheNew England Journal of Medicine 1990 reported that fluoride treatment of osteoporosis patients resulted in higher hip fracture rates. The governmental National Institute of Environmental and Health Sciences 1990 has shown that fluoride causes cancer. Former promoters of fluoridation have since found that fluoridation does not reduce tooth decay 1987-1988. Scientist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 1989-1993 have come out against fluoridation because they have confirmed that it does not reduce tooth decay and that there is clear evidence that fluoride causes cancer. The American Chemical Society published a 17-page cover story 1988 questioning the safety and effectiveness of fluoridation. Its used in Rat Poison people google it!

I will never understand why people would choose to do without something that would keep their teeth healthier. Fluoride is a good thing folks. It keeps your teeth from decaying. There is nothing wrong with it. Really. In parts of the country, the water is naturally fluoridated and it's been proven that those people have healthier teeth. Why would you do this to your children?

The same city council members plan to vote next week to subsidize Mountain Dew as a healthier more affordable alternative to baby formula.
