SPOKANE--The Spokane Fire Department battled an early morning house fire in the West Central neighborhood.

The fire started shortly before 9 a.m. at a home at 1924 W. Augusta.  911 Callers reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the home and the occupants evacuating.

The fire was located on the first floor and the basement of the home.  Crews had to cut holes in the roof of the home to allow them to attack the fire.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in just over an hour.

No people died in the fire, but two dogs were killed by the smoke and extreme heat.

Investigators are on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
