SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- Authorities confirmed a train hit a car near the intersection of Trent and Park around 7 p.m. Friday night, leaving a woman critically injured.

According to witnesses, the driver of a small sedan was stopped on the south side of the train tracks on Park as the arms were lowering for an eastbound train.  As the arm was nearly lowered, the 49-year-old female driver drove forward, breaking the arm, and stopped on the tracks.  Railroad employees said the driver had enough time to move, but stayed on the tracks.

The vehicle was struck by the train, which was not able to avoid the collision but stopped within a short distance of the crash.

The woman was transported to the hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office placed the collision under investigation.
