SPOKANE -- SCRAPS is warning everyone in Spokane County to beware of a series of possible poisoning incidents that killed three dogs Friday.

This morning a woman reported that she let her dogs outside at approximately 6:00 a.m. and when she went outside to feed her horses on her property near Regal and the Palouse Highway. While outside, she saw one of her dogs eating something. She called her dog away from what was later identified as meatballs and approximately one half hour later the dog started having convulsions and was taken to the Pet Emergency Clinic where it later died.

In the second incident, two dogs were reported dead by another owner in the vicinity of 55th and Freya.

SCRAPS officers report more of the possibly poisoned meatballs were found on the 3300 block of East 55th on the side of the road, and in the same area but inside a fenced yard.

“All pet owners should closely inspect their yard and surrounding property when they arrive home tonight,” said Nancy Hill, Director of SCRAPS. “We have now linked the two suspected poisonings and are very concerned that there are more out there,” continued Nancy Hill.

The suspected meat is being sent to Washington State University where it will be tested.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents or wanting to report suspicious activity which might be related to this type of animal cruelty is asked to call SCRAPS at 477-2761. This level of cruelty could result in a charge of animal cruelty in the first degree, a class C felony which carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and $10,000 fine.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for poisoning these dogs if testing confirms poison.

As a dog lover I believe it's deplorable for someone to poison one. If the dog is running loose it's only his/her nature. It doesn't know it's a problem.......rather the owner who isn't responsible enough to keep the dog under control should be poisoned.

SPOKLAHOMAROX... Now you're going to insult me having children?!?! I'd enjoy it a lot if you could go just a tiny bit more past the subject at hand... :) And really, STAPH with an F was super clever...applause to you for your witty remark! Don't you realize that more than half the people on this comment page are outraged by your remarks?!? I understand everyone has their opinion and is definitely entitled to one, but not when it stems from ignorance and hatred. So, long story short, poisoning meatballs is wrong, blaming one specific breed as being aggressive and mean is wrong, and you, Spoklahomarox, are wrong.

The ***holes that are doing this are about as low a species as you can get. What difference does it make what KIND of dog was killed? What if the dog's were POODLES? GOLDEN RETRIEVERS? LABRADORS? You're all getting off point. There are many other animals that could come in contact with the "meatballs" and consume them. I'd watch out for the kid's if you have any.

Hiya joonsdad: check it! There are are two of us, I reckon. Me and spoklahomarox. I dont like pits, but I'm all aghast at poisoning them. I've never been a fan of the "final solution" for anything, yo. The Spoklahoma"rox" person, they are the one you are mad at. I have a question for you, though. You kept the pup of the dog that bit yr face off. I have to ask you why, my friend. No judging - I just want to hear yr words as to why....thanks for yr response :)

I was bitten in the face by a pit bull in 2005 resulting in over one third of my bottom lip being taken off. Fortunately the cosmetic surgeon did a remarkable job fixing what could have been a horrific injury. I am also the owner of the sibling of the offending pit bull and he is, i must admit a little aggressive toward strangers. I do feel that these dogs have an exaggerated reputation, which may simply be due to their popularity over the course of the last few decades. To spokalohoma or what ever, i have read many of your comment on a variety of subjects and am more than a little disappointed that that you have resorted to such juvenile remarks directed at the vet tech. In the past your remarks on other subjects have seemed reasonable and open minded, where is that person now? And as far as any type of animal cruelty, there should be mandatory minimum sentences of at least two years in prison. The person who swung that little dog against the wall was out in a few months.

Everyone with a brain that is functioning properly, knows pitts are DANGEROUS. No need arguing. Anyhoo, regardless of that FACT, these dogs shouldn't have been poisoned. That's criminal...to just go around poisoning dogs. A child or other wildlife could have gotten ahold of these. If someone wanted to get rid of dangerous dogs, like pitts, it should be done legally. Start a petition, go to city hall and make some noise.

It takes a pretty twisted person to poison an animal like that. The flip side of the coin, however, is what were these dogs doing running loose that they could get at meatballs alongside the road? Responsible dog owners keep their dogs on their property, not running loose through the neighborhood, threatening people either by their size or aggressive nature. A dog running loose, however, is no excuse for doing this sort of thing. Spokane does have a leash law.

Punish the deed, not the breed. We found a pit pup on the street and took him in.He had been abused. We nursed him back to health. He is 14 years old now and is the best family dog.He loves and protects our 3 children. dog!Pit Bulls get a bad rep.It IS how they are raised. We love the breed so much that we just got a new pit puppy. The person that did this needs to be caught and punished to the full extent of the law. Our hearts go out to the families that have lost their beloved pets.

spoklahomarox, the people of Hillyard are hard working, well educated, and know how to respect others, unlike yourself. Myself and several other graduates of Rogers hold very important positions, from labor leaders to scientists at NASA to world renowned musicians. Your lack of education definitely shows in your hateful comments. From your comments it seems to me that you are probably a high school dropout and the only job you can get is in fast food or lawn care. NO animal deserves to be senslessly murdered in this way.

The American Canine Temperament Testing Association titles dogs that are able to pass their temperament tests. Tests involve a variety of unfamiliar situations with some including strangers to the animal. If any unprovoked aggression or panic is shown, the dog automatically fails. Every year from 2002 to 2005, the Pit Bull breed beat out the Golden Retriever, commonly known for having a gentle temperament. Ninety five percent (one of the highest amongst all breeds) of pit bulls pass these tests, while on average only seventy-seven percent of dogs pass. Shar-Peis (69.4%), Dachshunds (75.2%), Lhasa Apsos (70.8%), Scottish Terriers (62.1%), Silky Terriers (68.8%), Sky Terriers (37.5%), and Toy Poodles (79.1%) tend to show much more aggression (Hatter). How about those goldens who couldn't keep up with the pit bull temperaments? Theres some real stats, want some more, I can keep them coming.

kemare20: Have you even been to this part of town? Most of this the property off the Palouse is farm land where people raise their horses, cows, chickens, and what not. Most farm people have their dogs run freely on their land and no matter if the dog was on their land vs someone else's property, it does not condone someone poisoning them NO MATTER WHAT THE BREED IS. We have two boxers and people constantly think they are dangerous dogs b/c they are muscular well fit dogs which couldn’t be the furthest thing from the truth. As for Pitts, I personally would not own one just b/c my boxer was attacked by one when she was 6 months old but that does not mean the whole breed is tainted! Pitts strive to please their owners similar to boxers. So if you take an ignorant owner who breeds their dog to be an attacker, that’s what they are going to do. So I agree, to blame the breed, blame the idiot irresponsible ignorant person trying to create themselves a bad a@@ dog.

some dogs are just bad regardless of what breed/breeds it may be. but that is NOT the issue here. the issue is that somebody is poisoning dogs and endangering the lives of others in the process - and it's not okay. a person like this is far worse than any dog could ever be, a person like this is never fit to participate in society; they can't be fixed, it is in their nature to harm for whatever reason and the kindest thing we can do for them and for ourselves is to eradicate them before they pass on those genes or hurt anybody/anything else. sounds eerily familiar, doesn't it? some people, just like some dogs, shouldn't be permitted to walk among us. and some people, like some dogs, are just bad. it's not cultural or racial or socioeconomic, just as it's not breed-specific in dogs - it just IS. let's just focus on taking care of the problem, catching this person/persons and bringing them to justice. that's what this is all about.

If they are TRULY a part of the family and you truly love them- PROTECT THEM!!! Do NOT just let them roam the streets.

My guess is the real target is one dog, or dogs, on one property that has caused trouble for one of its neighbors, excessive barking, etc., and the perp is spreading it around to avoid suspicion as they have already gotten into it with the dog's owner and the problem was not resolved. It's fine to have a dog or several dogs but you should not let it sit outside and bark all day and disturb your neighbors or let it roam the neighborhood leaving messes in other people's yards. I have had dogs all of my life but when my dog is outside and she starts barking at something I bring her in the house immediately. And people should never leave their dogs outside while they are away from home. Some dogs will bark the entire time their owner is gone trying to call their owner back home.

And just for the record I do not condone poisoning these dogs or cruelty to animals of any kind. If the freak that is doing this is targeting Pits, it is the wrong way to go about it. If the person or people involved are just doing it randomly, to any dog, that is even sicker and need locked away. Hopefully, it is the former and not latter. The original pic from krem was a pit and thats how this thread got started. However, I still stand by the need to stop breeding these animals and some sort of regulation involving ownership.

Myth #1: It's the owner not the breed The outdated debate, "It's the owner, not the breed," has caused the pit bull problem to grow into a 30-year old problem.1 Designed to protect pit bull breeders and owners, the slogan ignores the genetic history of the breed and blames these horrific maulings -- inflicted by the pit bull's genetic "hold and shake" bite style -- on environmental factors. While environment plays a role in a pit bull's behavior, it is genetics that leaves pit bull victims with permanent and disfiguring injury. The pit bull's genetic traits are not in dispute. Many U.S. courts agree that pit bulls pose a significant danger to society and can be regulated accordingly. Some of the genetic traits courts have identified include: unpredictability of aggression, tenacity ("gameness" the refusal to give up a fight), high pain tolerance and the pit bull's "hold and shake" bite style.

I say we fence in Hillyard and keep all the morons and their Pits home where they belong. Without a Wal-mart they will all starve to death sooner or later anyways, right? Yeah, beautiful breed of dog, lets keep breeding them and punishing the deed. In the 3-year period from 2006 to 2008, pit bull type dogs killed 52 Americans and accounted for 59% of all fatal attacks. Combined, pit bulls and rottweilers accounted for 73% of these deaths. http://www.dogsbite.org/newsroom-release-dog-bite-fatality-study-042209.htm

your Golden now, get the facts straight, it's your ignorance as well as many others which give this stigma to the pit bulls. It used to be rottweilers, german shepards, and even dachsunds that were the vicious dogs, come on now, none of these animals attack more than any other, it's how the animal is raised, not what type of animal it is. More people drown per year than are attacked by pit bulls, should we outlaw swimming? Just remember, "Ignorance is contagious" Somebody gave it to you, quit spreading it.

Your declaration of this breed being "dangerous" would have a lot more credibility if backed with facts. Unfortunately for you, actual statistics will demonstrate that poodles bite more people a year than pitbulls do thus completely eradicating any type of "vicious" breed arguement you may try and bring to the table. Do us all a favor and do some research and then maybe contribute. :)

If you really are a person filled with such ignorance and stupidity to believe pit bulls are the devil incarnate, do you really think they should be killed? I am a veterinary technician and see poison cases all the time...do you know how horrible death is by poisoning?! How could any human being believe it is fair to inflict death upon another living, breathing creature because of the label in which society has put upon it? How dare you pass judgment on one of God's creatures...in my profession, all breeds can be aggressive...it's all up to their past and who owns them. So, long story short...put away the label maker, have some sympathy and blame the deed, not the breed. Thank you, have a nice day.

However, we cannot deny the fact that he may believe that he is saving other dogs and even peoples lives! I would never go visit a soul that had a pit!!! However, it is not our job to go out and take them out!!!!!!

Yes, I blame the breed because the breed has been bred to dismember and kill. I also blame the breeders as well as the owners. It is a bad situation all the way around and if you can't see that, you sir are the ignorant one. You can bring up a member of the breed to not dismember and kill but unfortunately you never know if it has been done properly until you either look back on the animals life and you have had no incidents or it has killed or disfigured another animal or human being. No, it is not right for someone to be killing these dogs but the breed is known for what it has done regardless of whether its the breed, the breeders or the owners.

Simple punishment for the jerks - make them eat the same meat that they are feeding to the animals and forget the way to the hospital!! Pit bulls can be very good pets, I have known several people who own them and they are very loving. Seems to me that animals are like people, if raised badly the outcome will be bad... So spoklahomarox think before you speak.

spoklahomarox really? Are you really blaming the breed? That is ignorant! The best dog and I mean family dog I have ever owned was a pitt. It is not the breed it is how they are raised! And regradless of the breed someone is killing these dogs and that is awful!

Who ever is doing this is a sick freak and needs to be severely punished. Unfourtunatly you can't be home 24/7 to watch your pet if you leave them in the back yard.
