MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. -- An actual paper trail led to the arrest of three boys in Medical Lake.
A deputy patrolling near Spence and Bower at 1:30 a.m. Friday noticed a cell phone and a backpack lying on the corner. He also found papers in the middle of the road.
He followed them to Washington Street, where he found more papers and books in the street. At the end of the trail he came across a car with an open door. Police knocked on the homeowner’s door, who said the books, backpack and paper were hers. The woman left the materials in her unlocked vehicle.
Other officers then arrived to patrol the area. Two parents approached one of them during the search to say their three boys were running around the area.
Two of them were found shortly after. The kids and parents reportedly confirmed it was their kids stealing during an interview with police. At the same time, the third boy was caught hopping a fence into a nearby backyard.
Police say the three boys admitted to stealing from several homes, even taking a gun from one location and hiding it under one of their beds. The gun ended up being fake and not capable of shooting bullets.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who might have been a victim should call Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
The three boys were taken to juvenile for one count each of second-degree vehicle prowling and third-degree possession of stolen property. Additional charges are possible.
