SPOKANE -- Squatters are tearing apart abandoned homes in the path of the North-South Freeway.  Police say they are literally stealing everything, including the kitchen sink.  They say the 4000 block of East Second is one of the worst.  Nearly every vacant home has been ransacked.

The Department of Transportation bought 250 homes so far in the East-Central neighborhood.  Police patrol the area every day.  They say 80% of the vacant homes are vandalized.  They have found light fixtures missing as well as sinks, toilets and bath tubs.

This is not a one time hit.  While the thieves cash in, they also stay the night.  They have replaced dead bolts with their own and had keys to go in and out.

Stephanie Polley is one of the neighbors whose home will butt up right against the freeway.  For months she has been living on the edge.

"Someone went in and tried to stop the person from stealing copper and they actually stabbed the person," said Polley.

Terri Bayley is also a neighbor and she says things are better since the police arrests, but feels not much can be done until the houses are torn down.  That is expected to be done in about 3 to 4 weeks.

onarant....I think its more about the sort of people hanging around the area (for hte people who still live here and were not luck enough to have been bought out by the stae) I did not see any mention about it being a loss to anyone but if the sate had anyone with brains running the show they would pull these things as soon as the house is empty and donate the stuff to the Habitat Store, that would keep the theives away and help out those who are more deserving. I know there would still be the problem with people staying in them but with toilets, tubs, sinks, etc. they may be a little less likely.

Great job reporting, KREM: thank you PERCH23, always good to be noticed! Now, I really don't see where they are doing anything all that wrong. They might think that they are going to throw it all away anyway. Also, they have to have a place to live. It's the way of the future! In just a few more years there will be by far more homeless than housed, so, when they see an empty house, they will stay there! I would too but I would not destroy the place! I recall a time when they tore down a structure in Nashville. They told the homeless that they could have whatever they so wanted. The iron company was just a few blocks away at that time. There was a convoy all the way from thhere past the Jefferson Street bridge a block away! When they were done there was little left!!!

If the houses are just going to be torn down anyway, why worry about them taking the stuff?
