COLFAX, Wash. -- Whitman County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of an injured female Tuesday near a rest area on SR-195.  When deputies arrived, the 18-year-old victim told investigators she had been assaulted at a residence near Thornton.

The victim told investigators she met an individual, identified as Steven Ray Root, 41, in Spokane Monday.  The teenager said she agreed to travel with Root from Spokane to Thornton to clean his home in exchange for $100.

She recounted that while in Root’s home, he provided her with methamphetamine and other narcotics.  The victim also told deputies she observed a large amount of firearms in the home.  After using drugs with Root, she became uncomfortable and tried to leave the residence.  That’s when investigators say Root assaulted the girl.

Root was later arrested on an outstanding federal warrant for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance.  A second man, Justin Robert Grout, 35, was also contacted and arrested on a Spokane County warrant for Second Degree Criminal Trespass.

During a search of Root’s home, where the assault was reported to have taken place, deputies found approximately 90 grams of methamphetamine, $1500 cash, five guns, and numerous items of drug paraphernalia.

Root was expected to face additional charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance Methamphetamine, Felon in Possession of a firearm, Possession of Paraphernalia, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and Second Degree Assault.
