SPOKANE, Wash. -- Bloomsday requires the largest police presence for Spokane Police for the entire year. This means bringing in officers on overtime.

KREM 2 On Your Side found that the taxpayer is funding 40% of those costs.

Spokane Police said it is hard to predict the exact cost because officers working extra for the event can chose overtime pay or a comp day at time and a half.

The department said it is all about keeping your family safe.

In 2013, there were no major incidents at the event.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said they typically work the parking areas but on Sunday, they will just be doing basic county patrols.
