SPOKANE, Wash.--North by Northwest Productions announced on Wednesday a new TV series for the Syfy Network that would be shot and produced in Spokane.

There had been about 50 movies shot in the Spokane area but the series would be the first TV series to be produced from start to finish in the area.

Staff at North by Northwest said almost everyone involved in the project was from the Spokane area.

The new show would come to Syfy in the fall of 2014.

"This is a real game changer for production here in Spokane,” said Rich Cowan with North by Northwest.

The company would have more than 100 employees working on the show full time. The show would be called Z Nation and would take on the popular topic of zombies.

"It takes place four years after the Zombie Apocalypse and it's actually a series about hope and survival,” said Cowan.

Cowan said 13 episodes would be shot, produced and edited in Spokane. Cowan said they would start shooting in May and would keep shooting until September.

Cowan said they would use almost 200 actors and 1,300 extras. He said a majority of those spots would be for zombie actors and extras.

"We have deserts, mountains, and lakes and that can depict different areas of the country and that's what's really great about doing the series here in Spokane,” said Cowan.

Cowan said the show would highlight Spokane neighborhoods, landmarks and many other parts of the city and country. He added another reason Spokane was chosen is the low traffic and parking problems that would be found in Los Angeles or New York.

Cowan hoped the show would run for several years and always take place in Spokane.

Roles were still being cast in April if you want to be part of the series. Cowan said you have to go through a talent agency to be considered for the show.
