SPOKANE, Wash. -- A suspected truck thief led a pursuit and forced a local school into lock down, according to police.

It started Thursday morning when an officer tried to pull over the truck for a red light violation at Empire and Standard.

Police say the man did not stop and sped away. They pursued him shortly but decided to end the chase because of icy roads.

Investigators tracked down the truck to Cincinnati & Kiernan. They say he abandoned the truck, took off his shoes and ran away from the scene on foot.

The Spokane Police Department notified nearby Longfellow Elementary School about the suspect on the loose. Police then brought in a K-9 unit to track him down, but the man remains at large.
As some officers searched for the suspect, others looked further into the truck. They say the vehicle was stolen, along with the plates.

Although it's located farther away from the scene than Longfellow, Rogers High School followed its lead. The high school also went on lock down as a precaution.
