SPOKANE-- Crews worked to rescue a man Tuesday afternoon after he ran from police and jumped in the Spokane River.

Spokane Police say they were attempting to arrest Josh Kratz for a couple of misdemeanor warrants including reckless driving, and a suspended license. Kratz ran from officers near the 1500 block of East Mallon.

Kratz attempted to elude police and jumped into the Spokane River.

Kratz was heard yelling he would rather die than go to jail. Officers tried to negotiate with Kratz, but a dive team and boat were sent into the water.

Police say Kratz went down the river and eventually gave up, swam to shore on his own near Trent and Hamilton

Kratz is in custody and faces new charge of obstructing police officers.
