SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A suspect driving a stolen car led deputies on a chase and crashed head-on into a K-9 patrol vehicle early Tuesday morning.

Authorities said the pursuit began around 1:30 a.m. near Sprague and Freya after a deputy spotted a stolen 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver would not stop and drove off.

There were multiple collisions during the chase, including the crash with the K-9 patrol vehicle, investigators said. Deputies said the suspect, identified as Hector Rodriguez, 43, intentionally hit the deputy’s patrol vehicle.

The deputy continued in pursuit but the patrol car eventually became inoperable due to a flat tire from the collision.  The deputy and his K-9 partner, Laslo, were not injured, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

During the pursuit, deputies saw there was a female passenger that was trying to either get Rodriguez to stop and/or exit the vehicle, authorities said. The woman eventually jumped out of the passenger side before the stolen Chevy crashed into small trees near Barker and Appleway, according to investigators. She was injured and was listed in stable condition at a local hospital Tuesday morning. Investigators believe Rodriguez was in a relationship with the woman at one time.

Authorities said Rodriguez ran from the vehicle but Laslo located him a short distance away hiding underneath a deck in a residential area.  Rodriguez was taken into custody and booked into jail for Unlawful Imprisonment/Domestic Violence, 2nd Degree Assault, Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Felony Eluding, Vehicular Assault, DUI, Resisting Arrest and Obstructing.

Deputies said additional charges were possible.
