SPOKANE—The driver who was trapped in her upside down car, in a creek, for more than an hour and a half, believes divine intervention is the reason she is still alive today.

Xochitl Rodriguez-Burnett was driving to work last Thursday when she hit a patch of ice on Cheney-Spokane Road.  Her car flipped three times before landing upside down in a nearby creek.

Burnett says the force of the crash ripped her seat loose and her car quickly filled with water.

“I just remember I was trying to get some air and I couldn’t,” says Burnett.  “I couldn’t breathe so I stopped trying and I stopped struggling.  I stopped moving my arms and I just remembered waiting.  I thought ‘I’m going to die’”

Burnett thought about her friends and family and prayed to God as she fought to hold her nose above water.  After 10 minutes she went unconscious.

A passerby spotted Burnett’s car and called 911.

It was at least an hour and forty minutes before rescuers arrived.  Burnett says she woke up when she heard deputies banging on her window.

Burnett was treated for hypothermia and is still recovering from bumps and bruises suffered during the crash.
