SPOKANE -- A large group of demonstrators gathered on Gonzaga's campus Friday to protest the banning of the play "The Vagina Monologues."
Demonstrators mostly silently protested in front of the Crosby Student Center, where the university held a viewing party for Gonzaga's NCAA Tournament first-round game against Florida State. Supporters say the play draws attention to violence against women. Students say they are disappointed the university's interim president banned the play, especially after he spoke out against sexual assaults on campus earlier in the year.
Interim President Dr. Thayne McCulloh ruled earlier this week that the play would not be at the school this Spring, and should be held off-campus. The play's web site says it has been performed in about 40 Catholic universities.
The play was also banned from Gonzaga's campus in 2002.
