SPOKANE -- A stolen Volkswagen van that turned up more than 30 years later in a Los Angeles seaport was sold Friday to the highest bidder for more than $30,000.
Allstate Insurance paid Spokane native Michele Squires after she reported the van stolen in 1974. When the van turned up in a cargo ship bound for the Netherlands this fall, Allstate decided to auction it off.
The bidder was not disclosed, but the van was sold for $30,250.
Allstate plans to donate the net proceeds to Lydia Place, a nonprofit organization for homeless women and children in Bellingham.
