SPOKANE, Wash. -- A new 15-story hotel will be going up in downtown Spokane but it will be a couple more years until its impact on Spokane will be known.
Bulldozers and construction offices were in place on Wednesday in the parking lot of the Convention Center. Local Tourism groups said that that the new hotel will help them bring in more visitors that may not have the area on their radar.
"That's what we'll all be working on," said Cheryl Kilday, the CEO of Visit Spokane, "making sure we bring in more new business, this isn't intended to be shifting groups that are already coming to Spokane from one hotel to another."
Early sketches of the hotel have been released but the final design is not known. The hotel will have a national brand but the chain is not known either.
Visit Spokane said that this is a big step for the community to have another hotel connected to the Convention Center along with the Double Tree. They added that it will put Spokane in the running with Salt Lake City, Portland, and San Jose for future events.
"Those are centers that we'll really be able to compete with and we're really excited about that," said Kilday.
Visit Spokane said they are already busy looking for new conventions to bring to town beginning in 2016 while early construction prep work begins.
"The planning window is generally three years and out for some of those groups that this hotel will help us attract," Kilday said.
The parking lot should close within the next week or so.
