SPOKANE-The principal at Stevens Elementary is pushing for change after one of his students was hit in a crosswalk on the way to school.

12 year-old Jayden Basden was hit in the crosswalk and seriously injured on his way to school Monday at the intersection of Mission and Magnolia.

It happened only 5-10 minutes before the adult crossing guards went on duty.  Crossing guards already start early at Stevens because of a large group of children participating in the Free and Reduced Breakfast Program.

The flashing lights are activated by key, so the system only operates during cross guard shifts.

Stevens Elementary School Principal Mike Crabtree would like to see a newer system.

The city says they’ll be talking with school leaders about possible safety improvements.

The student who was hit is expected to make a full recovery.
