WALL WALL, Wash. -- Officials at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla are making final preparations for the first execution since 2001. Cal Coburn Brown is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 12:01 a.m. Friday for the 1991 rape, torture and murder of 22-year-old Holly Washa near Sea-Tac airport.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Maria Peterson says guards are moving Brown from his cell to a eight-by-ten foot holding cell near the execution chamber. The U.S. and State Supreme Court refused to stop Brown's execution.
For his last meal, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman said Brown requested pizza, apple pie, and root beer.
After his final meal, at least two officers will escort Brown to the execution room. That is where he will be placed on a table and restrained. I.V.s will be placed in both arms. But the medical team will administer the deadly sodium thiopental chemical from an adjacent room to protect their identities.
Officials expect reporters and death penalty protesters to gather outside the prison in southeast Washington.
