SPOKANE, Wash.-- Director of Law Enforcement Frank Straub will skip more than 700 hours of police academy training.
The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission granted Straub a waiver Wednesday.
Despite 28 years of law enforcement experience, Straub cannot be named the next police chief until he becomes a commissioned officer. He will now complete his commission through a nine week, online course.
Director Straub, along with interim Chief Scott Stephens and former U.S. Attorney for Eastern Washington Jim McDevitt, attended a meeting with the Criminal Justice Training Commission to seek that waiver.
Director Straub is scheduled to begin work on Oct. 1. Once he meets the requirements for a Washington state police commission, Straub’s title will change to Chief of Police.
