SPOKANE -- The vision for a public market in Downtown Spokane is taking shape. The year round market is slated to open in May. Now local vendors have high hopes for the space.
The building on West Second in Downtown Spokane had been vacant for the last year, but that is all about to change. Next week, renovations start for the Spokane Public Market and that news is inspiring Spokane farmers.
On Monday, vendors snagged a sneak peek of what the Spokane Public Market will look like. For local farmers and producers they say Spokane really needs a year round venue and they hope it will be similar to Seattle’s Pike Place Market.
Organizers say recent interest in eating healthy local foods fueled the creation of the year-round market. It will focus on helping people interact with area food and farm producers and limit imports. Vendors are so thrilled they are already picking out where to set up shop. For them, the market is an avenue to show their product to the public and gives them the change to expand in the future. It provides them with a store front in a way.
So far, 40 vendors are signed up and there is still room for dozens more. Organizers envision the market will grow to become a public attraction for Spokane.
The plan is to open the market in time for Memorial Day. It will then be open all year long, four days a week.
