Spokane resident Bernadine Van Thiel, 89, said the whole Twilight Wish experience was more than she could’ve ever imagined.
On the first day, she and her daughter had a personal guide take them through the Jimmy Carter Museum & Archives in Atlanta.
The following day, Van Thiel knew she would get a chance to shake hands with Carter and his wife after the church service, but the former U.S. President, her hero, beat her to it.
“I was sitting in the pew and Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter came over to greet me and shake my hands,” Van Thiel said. “Completely unexpected. I was so overwhelmed I almost burst into tears.”
Twilight Wish Foundation’s mission is to make seniors’ dreams come true. So far, the foundation has granted nearly 2,000 wishes, but Van Thiel was the first senior to request to meet Jimmy Carter.
