SPOKANE, Wash.--Local rescuers in Spokane teamed up Saturday in the first annual Meet the Animal Rescuers event.

The rescuers hope to raise awareness. They said all animals need homes.

"Horses.. .you name it. There are rescues for every animal out there,” said Dachshund Rescue NW Director, Margo Mossburg.

Mossburg put on the first Meet the Annual Rescuers event to raise money for Dachshund Rescue NW. The organization trains and finds homes for weiner dogs. She said she also started the organization to let people know there is help for every animal.

"They end up just staying in people's back yards and starving to death,” said Director of Rough Start Horse, Jeremiah Freeman.

Rough Start Horse rescues dozens of horses each year.

"People get horses in and realize they can't take care of them properly,” said Freeman.

Dachshund Rescue NW rescued its 1000th dog Saturday and raised about $300.

"A little bit of food and water can change a life,” said Freeman.

The event will continue on Sunday at the Spokanimal Event Center.
