SPOKANE – A partnership between Shaw Middle School and Rogers High School is turning eighth graders into high school students for the entire school day.

While freshman orientation and big-group visits are standard for incoming freshmen, the “Pirate for a Day” program pairs each Shaw Middle School eighth grader with a Rogers High School upper-classman for a unique, one-on-one introduction to high school. And high school doesn’t stop for the occasion.

“Nobody’s performing anything, the teachers keep on teaching, the leadership students just keep on learning,” Shaw Middle School GEAR UP liaison Kipton Solmonson said. “My kids come along and they’ll learn some of the content but they’re getting an experience that the big-group kind of transition doesn’t provide.”
