SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- A Spokane man who had been facing only misdemeanor charges of obstruction and indecent exposure is now facing a possible felony assault charge after fighting with a county corrections deputy.
After the 30-year-old man was arrested Friday evening he was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation. He was under guard when hospital staff attempted to move him to another bed and he tried to escape.
Sheriff's spokesman Craig Chamberlain said the man tried to take the deputy's sidearm out of its holster. The deputy was able to maintain control with the help of the hospital staff. During the fight the deputy received a cut on his forehead that required six stitches.
The suspect was moved from the hospital and booked into jail.
