SPOKANE, Wash.-- A fire from a burning school bus spread to the brush around it in south Spokane County.

It broke out around 4:30 a.m. near Big Rock Road and Kiesling. A newspaper delivery person noticed the fire and called 911.

The fire department said someone set fire to the Deer Park School District bus. The flames scorched about a quarter of an acre and destroyed the vehicle. One home was threatened.

The fire could could have been much worse if a call wasn't made sooner according to Fire District 8 Division Chief Tom Hatley.

Fire officials first believed someone might have been living in the bus, but it actually was stolen from a private citizen Thursday. The owner bought it from a school district. The owner had stored some personally items purchased from an estate sale inside. The bus and all the items inside were completely destroyed.

Crews knocked down the fire quickly and prevented it from spreading to nearby homes.
