SPOKANE -- It has been a harsh reality for many Gonzaga basketball fans this weekend. Both the men and the women are out of their respective NCAA tournaments. Downtown Spokane bar owners are not too happy about it either. But some believe there are still enough tournament fans out there who will continue watch the games out on the town.
Alissa Wilde is a bartender at Monterey Cafe in downtown Spokane. It has several televisions and a huge projector for the games. Wilde said last year during the tournament, it was packed for every game. And that was even without the Bulldogs. Monterey, along with other bars, are also offering deals during the tournament to keep people coming in.
Some establishments said they worry people will stay home instead of going out now that the local connection is gone. But Wilde said Gonzaga or not, Spokane is known for staying true to its basketball pride.
"We're big basketball people here in general," said Wilde. "So whether it be Hoopfest or the NCAA Tournament or just random games throughout the season, it's usually pretty packed."
