SPOKANE VALLEY -- Sunrise Elementary choir students sang Christmas songs Thursday afternoon to usher in the holiday season.  It is their 10th annual 'Celebration of Lights'.  But just after the tree was lit, the assistant principal got the surprise of a lifetime.

Santa Claus arrived and called up several faculty members and then blindfolded them.  He gave them boxes to find out if they were naughty or nice.  That is when the assistant principal's boyfriend, Kevin Pittsley, swooped in and got down on one knee and proposed.

Deena Allen said yes.

The two of them went to University High together and have known each other for the past 22 years.  That is the reason why the engagement ring has 22 diamonds.

"I had an idea but I would've never expected this surprise," said Allen.  "He did a wonderful job."

The two have dated since July.  All of their families, friends were there to see the celebration.

They plan to have a small wedding ceremony with family sometime next summer.
