SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- Just in time for the holidays, a local military father gave his children a Christmas present to remember Friday.

Staff Sgt. Ben Indahl had been serving overseas in Kuwait and last year was not able to make it home for Christmas because of travel mishaps.  This year, Indahl wanted to make sure he wouldn’t miss the holidays with his two boys, Ashton and Aiden.

Indahl and his wife Shawna came up with a plan to surprise them.

Friday night, Shawna took the two boys to see Santa at the Spokane Valley Mall.  Little did they know that their dad would be waiting for them.

“I love Spokane,” Indahl said.  “This is where I'm from and [I’m] happy I could be here with my family."

Friday was the first time he had seen his kids in almost a year.  Indahl said they planned to go home, relax, and enjoy some serious family time.
