SPOKANE, Wash.-- The City of Spokane approved a stronger ordinance against people smoking in public.

Currently, there is no smoking allowing in bars or restaurants.  Anyone who chooses to smoke must do so outside and 25 feet away from the nearest door.

Under the new ordinance, police officers can now ticket people smoking too close to buildings.  Under the old law, the Spokane Regional Health District could only ticket a business for not enforcing the law.

The fine for smoking too close is about $100.

The council said businesses have been complaining they can’t get rid of smokers who refuse to move along.

KREM 2 talked to some smokers who said as long as police were courteous and didn’t slap them with a ticket, they wouldn’t have a problem with the new ordinance.  Police still need to form a plan for how to enforce the new ordinance.
