SPOKANE, Wash. – A marijuana grow facility in North Spokane County has neighbors worried it will bring crime to their community.
They also think they should have been told about the business before it was approved.
The Green Surfer has an approved permit with the state’s Liquor Control Board, which gives out marijuana licenses. Neighbors said they first heard about the business moving in back in April.
The Control Board said it is up to cities and counties to decide if businesses must notify the public about their location. In Spokane County, it is not required.
Neighbors in North Spokane County want to see leaders change the policy.
“They probably wouldn’t like it if it was right next to their home,” said Linda Carver.
People living next to the business accept that there is likely nothing they can do to keep it out of their neighborhood.
They also accept marijuana producers have to go somewhere in the county.
“I feel sorry for the people that have invested a lot of money but they have to realize us property owners have probably invested probably a lot more money than they will,” said Dennis Paradis.
Neighbors plan to bring their concerns to the county commissioners at a public hearing.
