SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash.  --KREM 2 on Your Side learned the Spokane County Sheriff's Office has maximized its budget to keep patrol cars on the road longer.

Administrators with the Sheriff's office have pushed to send deputies home with a patrol car.

It was an effort they wanted to accomplish without any additional expenses to taxpayers.

"We try to utilize all our vehicles, and try to maintain them and keep them in service as long as we possibly can," said one deputy.

To maximize each vehicle's use, deputies with the Sheriff's office said they often switch out parts from vehicles that are no longer operating.

According to deputies, the county has not auctioned off a car in almost two years, making more cars available for deputies to take home.

Deputies said they are not allowed to use their patrol cars for personal use.

Officials told KREM 2 News the biggest benefit of sending deputies home with cars is a quicker response time for emergencies.
