SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane street crews prepared overnight for a messy morning commute, which ended up avoiding city streets.
While only light flakes hit the metropolitan Spokane area, snow began falling around outlying areas of eastern Wash. and northern Idaho Tuesday night. It's expected to continue falling througout Wednesday, but there aren't curently any watches, warnings or advisories in effect.
Spokane's night crews were scheduled to stay late, and morning crews were prepared to come in early will to improve street conditions for the commute.
De-icer will be used on hills and at intersections on arterials initially. Street crews will switch to plowing once there is enough snow.
Snow is expected to accumulate more at higher elevations on the north and south sides of the city.
Two to 3 inches of snow also are falling in the Colville area of northeast Washington and 3 to 4 inches in the Blue Mountains of southeast Washington. Up to 8 inches of snow are expected in the mountains of the Idaho Panhandle.
