SPOKANE, Wash. -- Members of the Spokane City Council met behind closed doors Monday night to discuss an investigation into the former interim police chief.

The Spokane Police Department is performing an internal investigation of Capt. Scott Stephens.

Stephens was placed on administrative leave earlier this month by the chief.

All Spokane police have said publicly is that it’s an internal matter, not a criminal investigation.

Stephens was demoted from assistant chief to captain under Chief Straub’s restructuring of the department. He served as interim police chief after Anne Kirkpatrick left.

Council member Mike Fagan told KREM 2 he would talk about what he learned at the meeting Monday, but he did not return our calls.

Councilwoman Nancy McLaughlin did get back to us but said she could not talk about the meeting because personnel issues are confidential.
