SPOKANE, Wash.—A server at a Spokane restaurant got a generous tip from a customer. Someone left her a tip for $500.

The tab was only $66.25.

Staff at Famous Ed’s on Spokane’s South Hill have heard of those kind of generous tips but it has never happened there before.

The owner of the restaurant was touched to see that kind of gift come so close to Christmas. Owner Mark Starr did not believe it when he heard one of his servers got a $500 tip.

"At first I thought someone was playing a joke on me, and I actually dismissed the whole thing but then as I read the tip and remembered some things I'd seen in the news before, I said this could have actually happened and it did,” said Starr.

Along with the generous gift was a message about giving from God.

The receipt read “Merry Christmas, tips from Jesus.”

"Never seen anything like this before, I've read about it, I've heard about it, I've never experienced it before,” said Starr.

The waitress is putting the money to good use to help her out at work.

"This person didn't go out and buy something frivolous, actually she needed new tires for her car so she can continue to show up to her job on time,” said Starr.

It is a kind act that caught some off guard, but reminds everyone about helping others during the holiday season.

"I thought it was pretty neat, really awesome to see something like this, somebody actually gives to someone else, totally unexpected, totally by surprise, it wasn't a setup, nobody knew until it was over, it's a pretty cool thing,” said Starr.

The waitress wanted to remain anonymous. She did not want to bring attention to the gift so she kept quiet until the owner noticed it on the books Christmas week.

Reports show this is the second time restaurant customers in the Inland Northwest have left a large tip.  Earlier this month, a couple eating at an Ihop in Coeur D'Alene also left their server $500.
