SPOKANE, Wash. -- While large retail stores offered up deals to crowds of eager Black Friday shoppers, small local businesses were preparing for Small Business Saturday.

Business owners say the best thing about shopping local, apart from the deals, is the experience.  Smaller shops try to emphasize personal attention and unique selection.

"I like when they say ‘this color works on you’ or ‘I like that, did you see this," said shopper Nancy Marchand-Martella.

"If you can walk into a store and buy it, it's more fun,” said 4 Thousand Holes owner Bill Gallagher.  “A lot of people buy stuff online but my customers like to hold and buy stuff."

Store owners hope customers shopping on Small Business Saturday will keep coming back after the holiday shopping season is over.

"Anytime you can support a local business, it's a good thing,” said 4 Thousand Holes customer Patrick Barr.  “I'm happy to do it here."

Local owners said, like larger retail stores, the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend is the busiest time of the year for smaller shops.
