SPOKANE— One driver received a rude awakening Monday after falling asleep at the wheel in Spokane.

Police said the man woke up just before 7 a.m. as his car crashed head on into a power pole near Wellesley and Willow, just east of Argonne.

The impact of the crash split the power pole in half.  The pole and power lines fell over Wellesley, blocking traffic for a short time.  Avista crews quickly arrived to turn off power and clean up the wires.  It knocked out power to two nearby homes but Avista expected to have power back on by the end of the day.

Authorities said the driver did not suffer major injuries.  No word yet if the driver faces any charges.
