MEDICAL LAKE -- Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich is scheduled to tour Pine Lodge Correctional Facility Wednesday morning. County commissioners will also be on that tour. They're considering the state facility in Medical Lake for a new site for the Spokane County Jail.
Pine Lodge is currently a correctional center for women. However Governor Christine Gregoire has proposed closing correctional facilities across the state, including Pine Lodge, to offset budget shortfalls.
The City of Medical Lake is against the closure of Pine Lodge. City leaders say the minimum security facility provides jobs for the community, and they're not interested in having a higher security facility, like a county jail, in their backyard.
Spokane County is searching for a new jail site because of overcrowding issues.
