SPOKANE COUNTY—There are nearly 1,500 registered sex offenders living in Spokane County and most of them can live anywhere they want, including next to a school.

In some cases a parole officer can require a sex offender to live a certain distance from a school or daycare.  After an offender is done with supervision however, they’re free to live anywhere they want.

Employees at the Little Red School House were shocked to find out Washington State law does not require sex offenders to live a certain distance from schools or daycares.

The Little Red School House sits on Sprague Avenue between Howard and Wall Street.  There are four offenders living within a quarter mile, 38 within a half mile and 60 sex offenders living less than one mile from the daycare.  Many of them are the highest level offenders, with charges ranging from Child Molestation and even Child Rape.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s office says although there are no state regulations, they do perform regular checks.

The city of Issaquah set an ordinance about three years ago restricting living arrangements of level three sex offenders.  KREM2 is told all those sex offenders moved to Spokane because of the lack of regulations.
