SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -- A semi crashed into a tree Saturday morning north of Spangle, killing a passenger and sending the tree sprawling across Highway 195.
The crash was reported on Highway 195 near Smythe Road around 7 a.m. Washington State Patrol investigators said the driver of the semi fell asleep behind the wheel. The vehicle then traveled off the road and struck the tree.
The driver of the semi was out of the vehicle but emergency crews were trying to extricate a woman still trapped inside. The woman, identified as Kelsey Heidecker, 20, was later reported deceased. The driver, a 21-year-old male, suffered minor injuries.
The left lane of US 195 northbound was shut down from Milepost 83 at Smythe Road to Milepost 85 near Stuttler Road while emergency crews responded to the crash.
The roadway was reopened by Saturday afternoon.
Investigators said charges against the driver were pending.
