SPOKANE, Wash. -- A semi smashed into a tree branch downtown, creating a traffic mess Wednesday morning.
The semi was headed southbound on Browne Street when it struck the tree. Crews shut down the street from Sprague to 2nd Avenue for three hours while arborists worked to separate the tree from the truck.
Kelly Phillips, the truck’s driver, said he pulled over to lock down his hood. As he pulled away, the top of his truck took a tree with it.
"When I felt a tug,” he said, “I stopped and the next thing I know this tree just kinda fluffed over the top of my truck and the rest is history."
Phillips said it is the only wreck he has ever had. He was not hurt and police did not cite him.
The wind jammer on the top of the truck took the brunt of the damage. The tree and the slab of sidewalk were completely uprooted.
The roadway reopened around 11:30 a.m.
